The Young Republic Declares Independence:
The Independence Show
HOUSTON - Declare your independence with the Young Republic's first event on July 3rd, 2004. The Young Republic is a conceptual organization, with a commitment to bringing people of all mediums and artistic outlets together for the purpose of enamoring creative minds. The Independence Show will host an art exhibition, a music show, and the release of a magazine.
It is the stated goal of the Young Republic to promote progressive thoughts and artistic expressions, and through the malleability of the organizational framework, do so in fresh and exciting ways. The conceptual structure of the Young Republic is not entirely dissimilar from the art that it promotes, changing to fit into the same progressive mind frame of the artists it represents. All coordinated events are prepared in hopes of creating a forum for the exchange of creative and invigorating discussion through the exhibition of visual art, public forums and discussion panels that include scholars and enthusiasts of all backgrounds.
For the July 3rd event, the Young Republic’s visual art coordinator, Jenny Schlief, has selected visual artists mainly from the Austin and Houston areas, focusing on emerging and underexposed artists. This show features new works from Jeremy Eilers, Abraham Freeman, Andy Grotfeldt, Ryan Hennessee, Hana Hillerova, Paul Horn, Donna Huanca, Aimee Jones, Jonathan Marshall, Wyatt Nash, Charlie Patranella, Jon Read, Jenny Schlief, Jason Villegas and performances by Peter Tucker and Jeremy Eilers. All works focus on certain relevant themes of Americana, such as consumerism, disposable culture, commodification, and appropriation. Musical coordinator, Cynthia Simmons, has hand picked a variety of musical talent from around the state to aurally entertain. Musical talent such as Go Spread Your Wings, The SARS, Mock Run, and the Pretty Please will rock all night with DJ sets in between acts. Released that evening will be The Concussion Chronicles, a bawdy one print magazine, edited by literary coordinator, Gene Morgan.
Thanks to the Free Press for their sponsorship. Refreshments provided by the Proletariat. A suggested donation of $3 will graciously be accepted from kind and noble souls. Headquarters, the Young Republic’s exhibition space, is located next to DiverseWorks, inside Dramos Studios. Musical entertainment begins at 6:00pm, will stop between 7-9pm, then continues until 2:00am.
