Mexican Food!
So I am going to eat Mexican food tonight at a Mexican restaurant here in Houston. I get really excited about eating Mexican food, it is my favorite type of food.I would like to say that I'm somewhat of an expert in the subject of Mexican food restaurants here in Houston, but I think it's more that I have definite opinions on them. So here are some opinions of mine on some of my favorite Mexican restaurants here in Houston, in no special order:
1. "Little" Pappasito's on Richmond and Kirby - In my opinion it is the best Mexican food in town. A lot of people don't like this idea because it is a popular restaurant and it is a chain here in town and spreading throughout Texas. I think it kicks ass. The salsa is awesome and has a smokey flavor like they put meat drippings in it or something, so good. Also the fajitas are marinated perfectly and the cheese enchiladas have that good kind of melty cheese that isn't all stringy. The decor is tasteful Mexican items and whatever, but is better at this location than some of the other larger Pappasito's.
2. Cyclone Anaya's on Gray (Midtown Location) - This location gets packed on friday nights with ridiculous amounts of midtown yuppies and it looks like the 90's exploded all over. Which is ok, because the food is good and there's pictures all over the wall of the namesake Mexican wrestler everywhere too. I always love a feel-good story behind restauranteering. Their brunch is really good too, and the waiters can be forceful in getting you sloppy with the bottomless mimosas.
3. Chapultepec on Richmond in Montrose - Wow. This place is so great at like 4 am. The food is pretty shitty, but in a good way, hence the Don Juan Special that is french fries covered in queso, jalapenos and bacon. Their tostadas are awesome too and cheap. This is a very taqueria style place, with folding tables in the enclosed patio and they opened a room with a full bar maybe about a year ago. I can't remember the names for their crazy frozen alcoholic drinks, but they're funny.
4. Taqueria la Tapatia on Richmond - I used to love this place and only go here. That was in the 90's. Fuck, I'm getting old. But anyway, they remolded it in like 2000 or something and all the crapiness and charm has been lost a little. I feel like the prices are kinda high, but the margaritas make up for that at happy hour. Still good food though.
5. El Tiempo on Washington - I like this location better than the one on Richmond because people actually hang out at the bar at this one and it makes for good atmosphere in my opinion. I would say this is comparable to Pappasito's and Cyclone Anaya's and I love a place that gives green sauce with their salsa. They use a lot more white cheeses and has better seafood selection.
- This list was only supposed to be five, but I keep thinking of more so...deal.
6. Teotihuacan on Airline in the Heights - Man, this place is totally one of my favs. I used to not be able to not go at least once a week. Their green sauce is hand's down the best in the city and their combos are fucking insane. My favorite: the Sylvia, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Plus there is a rad mural of the City of the Dead in there.
7. Ninfa's on Navigation - Not a huge fan of Ninfa's, though they get points for green sauce. This location is the only one to go to. It's weird and you should go on a Sunday at like noon. People watching at it's finest.
8. Berryhill ALL - Fucking suck and don't waste your time. And what is the deal with the fucking dance party on Sunday with the location on Montrose? I really have tried to give this one a fair shake but it just bothers me. Whatever.
9. Molina's on Buffalo Speedway - Too many children. I hate kids.
10. Spanish Flowers on Main at Airline - Eh. Not as good as Teotihuacan just a little ways north on Airline, but their breakfast is pretty nuts. They give you free soup at dinner which is cool. Pretty building.
Ok I think I've pretty much worn out this subject and my brain congruently, so there you are.
<3 Jenny
